What it is like
The largest sandy beach on Gozo and the only one with real scale. The sand is genuinely reddish, which is where the name comes from, and the valley behind it has stayed undeveloped, so the view from the water is fields rather than hotels.
The wind
Ramla faces north. That is the whole story. In a northerly or a gregale it gets choppy and the swimming turns unpleasant, and in high summer that is also when the jellyfish arrive. With a southerly or a westerly it is calm and the bay is at its best.
If the north wind is up, Xlendi on the other side of the island will usually be flat.
Out of season
From November to March the kiosks shut and the beach is often completely empty on a weekday, which is arguably when it is worth seeing. The road stays open and the parking is free and unlimited.
